prostate cancer and PSA levels?
hello, my father has been diagnosed, PSA level of 374 pc, controllable but not curable, has been put into tables cyprostat then injections. lympg has a swollen gland neck n, but no other symptoms. Docs do not give the bone scan as mentioned, treatment will be the same in any case, and why finding things they can not do more to! I need to understand this more, what does it all mean, could this be provided controlled or is it just a matter of time? Anyone have any experience? What questions should I ask my dad to know it better? thanks
Hello, I am no expert, but I worked in a room of urology in the past. During this time I met many patients with prostate cancer, some of them had for years been patient. The hospital where I worked had a research department and many patienets prostate were recruited in clinical trials, although there is usually an age restriction that is not enrolling patients if less than five years far from the average life expectancy (I think the cut is somewhere between 75 and 80 do not remember exactly. Some patients also had bone scans that showed secondary involvement. Treatments used were prostatectomy radical hormonal treatment (which was used in patients for research) and in most cases, these treatments worked very well. However, I would like give false hope, 374 is quite high and swollen lymph glands, means there is a chance that the cancer has spread. There are a number of support groups which you can get more expert advice and I strongly recommend that you join one, or at least look at a website. Here are some links that can find useful: http:// http://www.labtestsonline.org.uk/understanding/analytes/psa/test.html http://www.prostate-cancer.org.uk/ www.prostatecancerfoundation.org/ I We hope his father's condition remains the control and I wish the best for the future Mel.
